Minutes of the Special Meeting of the Board of Directors of the Schleswig Community School District May 20, 2025 Call to Order: President Gurney called the meeting to order at 5:01 p.m. Members Present: Rachel Jacobsen, Cindy March, Danette Miller, Jason Schneider Absent: None Administration: Kim Buryanek, Superintendent; Andrea Gurney, Principal; Mallory Meyer, Business Manager/Board Secretary Others Present: Terry Abbe, Madison Allen, Sylvia Friedrichsen, Rianna Furne, Jen Hibma, Jessica Jurgensen, Cyndi Larson, Tiffany Moeller, Danae Petersen, Stacy Pritchard, Barb Quandt, Sally Sonnichsen-Abbe, Maria Valdez, Terra Winey The record should reflect that the applicant was advised the Board would be evaluating her past performance in connection with her application and potential hiring, and that she was given the option to request a closed session under Iowa Code 21.5(1)(i), but declined to do so. By knowingly declining this option, the applicant effectively waives any claims related to the disclosure of personnel information or any reputational harm that might result from the discussion occurring in an open session. Public Comment: Cyndi Larson spoke in favor of hiring Sally Sonnichsen-Abbe as the 2nd Grade Teacher due to her strong educational background. Sally Sonnichsen-Abbe provided a history of her educational career and addressed that she was unsettled with her earlier decision to retire. Consent Items - A motion was made by Rachel Jacobsen, seconded by Danette Miller to approve the consent items (agenda). Motion carried 5-0. Personnel Report Appointments- Andrea Gurney presented the process that led to the recommendation to hire. Based on this recommendation, Dr. Buryanek proposed the hiring of Sally Sonnichsen-Abbe. Following discussion, Jason Schneider moved, seconded by Rachel Jacobsen to remove the appointment from the table. Motion carried 5-0. Jason Schneider moved, seconded by Cindy March to approve the appointment of Sally Sonnichsen-Abbe as 2nd Grade Teacher. Motion carried 5-0. Adjournment-There being no further business to come before the Board for consideration at this time, the meeting was adjourned at 5:21 pm.
