Minutes Of the Regular Meeting of the Board of Directors of the Schleswig Community School District September 14, 2026 Call to Order: President Gurney called the meeting to order at 5:33 p.m. Members Present: Rachel Jacobson, Danette Miller (arrived late via phone), Trevor Nemitz, Ross Wood Administration: Kim Buryanek, Andrea Gurney, Mallory Meyer Others Present: Amanda Ashbrook, Sylvia Friedrichsen, Travis Squires (Virtually) Consent Items – Rachel Jacobson moved, seconded by Trevor Nemitz to approve the consent items (agenda, minutes, bills, financial reports) and move the open enrollment request to its own action item. Motion carried 4-0. Open Enrollment Request – Amanda Ashbrook addressed the Board about wanting to open enroll her son to Denison. After discussion, Rachel Jacobson moved, seconded by Ross Wood to deny the open enrollment request. Motion carried 4-0. Personnel Report a) Resignations- None b) Appointments- None SEA Update – Sylvia Friedrichsen reported that preparations continue for Calf Show Days, including an SEA raffle basket and reminded the Board of the t-shirt fundraiser. Danette Miller arrived by phone at 5:49 pm. Superintendent Report a) Resolution considering proposals for sale of School Infrastructure Sales, Services and Use Tax Revenue Bonds, Series 2026 and authorizing the execution and delivery of related documents – Ross Wood moved, seconded by Trevor Nemitz to remove the item from the table. Motion carried 5-0. Travis Squires from Piper Sandler joined the meeting via Google Meet to discuss the bids received that will finance the HVAC project underway at the school. Rachel Jacobson moved, seconded by Trevor Nemitz to approve the bid from United Bank of Iowa with an average interest rate of 4.5%. Ayes: Jacobson, Wood, Nemitz, Miller, Gurney. Nays: None. Motion carried 5-0. b) Approve 28E Agreement between Schleswig CSD and Immanuel Lutheran Church for Preschool Programming for the 2026-27 school year – Ross Wood moved, seconded by Rachel Jacobson to table this item to give legal counsel more time to complete the 28E agreement. Motion carried 5-0. c) Consider Facebook Campaign – Rachel Jacobson moved, seconded by Trevor Nemitz to approve the agreement with Roo Bea Design as presented for six months. Motion carried 5-0. Rachel Jacobson left the meeting at 6:29 pm. d) Approve Engagement of Nolte, Cornman, and Johnson PC to conduct financial audit for fiscal year 2026 in the amount of $16,000 – Ross Wood moved, seconded by Trevor Nemitz to approve the agreement as presented. Motion carried 4-0. j) Administrator Update – Mrs. Gurney reported: • This fall, 3 students are participating in volleyball, 2 in football and 1 in cross country. • 4th grade students will attend Ag Day in Ida Grove on September 18. • All middle school students are signed up for a Calf Show Days food stand shift. • Teacher professional development on September 21 will focus on screener data, setting up interventions, and learning about Computer Science Standards. • LSI will visit on September 22-23. 5th grade students will attend a presentation on hygiene and 6th grade students will attend a presentation entitled Know the Line. • School picture day is September 25. • Homecoming is October 2. • Students will participate in the Healthiest State Walk on October 6. • All School Band Night is October 9. • A generous donation from the Joyce and Bill Petersen Family allowed the district to purchase a sound garden which will be installed on the playground soon. Dr. Buryanek reported the heating coils for the new HVAC units arrived today with installation planned for Monday, September 21. k) Reminder of Regular Board Meeting on October 12, 2026 at 5:30 pm and Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) Annual Convention on November 18-20, 2026 a) Adjournment – There being no further business to come before the Board for consideration at this time, the meeting was adjourned at 6:47 pm.
