Minutes Of the Regular Meeting of the Board of Directors of the Schleswig Community School District February 9, 2026 Call to Order: President Gurney called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. Members Present: Rachel Jacobson, Trevor Nemitz, Ross Wood Absent: Danette Miller Administration: Kim Buryanek, Andrea Gurney, Mallory Meyer Others Present: McKenzie Weiss Correspondence: None Consent Items - Rachel Jacobson moved, seconded by Ross Wood to approve the consent items (agenda, minutes, bills, and financial reports). Motion carried 4-0. Public Hearing on Resolution to Continue Participation in the Instructional Support Program – President Gurney called the Public Hearing to order at 5:30 pm. There being no oral or written comments, the public hearing was closed at 5:31 pm. Personnel Report a) Resignations- None b) Appointments- None SEA Report – McKenzie Weiss reported the district recently celebrated school counseling week and the 100th day of school. Valentine’s day parties will be held on Thursday. Superintendent Report a) Resolution to Continue Participation in the Instructional Support Program – Rachel Jacobson moved, seconded by Ross Wood to adopt a resolution to continue participation in the instructional support program Ayes: Nemitz, Wood, Jacobson, Gurney. Motion carried 4-0. b) 2026-2027 Budget Adjustment (Guarantee) Resolution – Trevor Nemitz moved, seconded by Ross Wood to adopt a resolution to levy property taxes for fiscal year 2026-2027 for the regular program budget adjustment. Ayes: Nemitz, Wood, Jacobson, Gurney. Motion carried 4-0. d) First Reading of 205 Board Member Liability, 206.1 President, 206.2 Vice-President, 206.3 Secretary-Treasurer, 207 Board of Directors’ Legal Counsel, 208 Ad Hoc Committees, 208.R1 Board Committees Regulation, 209.1 Development of Policy, 209.2 Adoption of Policy, 209.3 Dissemination of Policy, 209.4 Suspension of Policy, 209.5 Administration in the Absence of Policy, 209.6 Review and Revision of Policy, 209.7 Review of Administrative Regulations – Rachel Jacobson moved, seconded by Trevor Nemitz to approve the policies as presented. Motion carried 4-0. Danette Miller arrived by phone at 5:43 pm. e) Discuss Preliminary FY27 Budget – Mallory Meyer presented budget information for discussion. Danette Miller arrived in person. f) Update on Elementary HVAC Project – Dr. Buryanek reported a pre-construction meeting was held on January 30 at 9:30 am with the general contractor, subcontractors, architect, and engineers in attendance. Construction is anticipated to begin in May including tunnel work and removal of the existing boiler. The project is expected to be complete by the end of July. The Board authorized Dr. Buryanek to approve change orders on behalf of the Board when the Board is not in session. g) Set Date, Time and Location for First Public Hearing on the FY27 Budget and Authorize Publication (March 20, 2026 at 12:00 pm in the District Conference Room) – Ross Wood moved, seconded by Trevor Nemitz to approve the public hearing as presented. Motion carried 5-0. h) Set Date, Time and Location for Second Public Hearing on the FY27 Budget and Authorize Publication (April 13, 2026 at 5:30 pm in the District Conference Room) – Rachel Jacobson moved, seconded by Danette Miller to approve the public hearing as presented. Motion carried 5-0. i) Set Date, Time and Location for Public Hearing on Schleswig CSD 2026-2027 Calendar (March 9, 2026 at 5:30 pm at Schleswig CSD, 714 Date Street, Schleswig, Iowa 51461 in the District Conference Room) – Rachel Jacobson moved, seconded by Trevor Nemitz to approve the public hearing as presented. Motion carried 5-0. j) Appoint Representative for Crawford County Assessor’s Conference Board – Rachel Jacobson moved, seconded by Danette Miller to approve Trevor Nemitz as the representative. Motion carried 5-0. k) Fundraising for School Supplies Initiative Update – President Gurney shared 150 meals were served and over $3,000 was raised at the recent School Supply Breakfast. He also thanked the volunteers who made this event possible. l) Administrator Update Mrs. Gurney shared: • Weston Stoppel, Roman Zaragoza, Taryn Johannsen, and Zoie Ferguson had artwork selected to be shown at the Sioux City Art Center for Youth Art Month. Zoie Ferguson’s artwork placed first in the 8th grade division. • Aubry Hoffmeier, Izzi Miller, Alison Mena, Ella Anders, Crisitine Velasquez, Stratton Stoppel, Nevaeh Huebert, Rhett Clausen, Bode Huebert, and Diego Perez Garcia submitted artwork for Art Educators of Iowa’s Youth Art Month Contest. Cristine Velasquez and Bode Huebert’s artwork was selected for the art exhibit in Des Moines. • Kimber Wood, Alison Mena, Ella Anders, Whitney Ernst, Oscar Gonzalez Escobar, June Jurgensen, Logan Stoppel, Zander Ziegmann were selected for the Southwest Iowa Choral Directors Association Honor Choir on March 10. • 8th grade students are working on their high school plans with Miss Weiss and Denison High School counselors. • The middle school will be attending a financial literacy presentation on Thursday presented by Fund Your Future. • There will be no school on Friday, February 13 and Monday, February 16. • 4th grade students will be taking the NAEP tests on February 18. • On February 24, the Nature Center will be visiting the district. m) Reminder of March 9, 2026 regular board meeting at 5:30 pm Adjournment – There being no further business to come before the Board for consideration at this time, the meeting was adjourned at 6:26 pm.
