MAPLE VALLEY-ANTHON OTO COMMUNITY SCHOOL REGULAR BOARD MEETING Wednesday, August 7th, 2024 7:00 PM Media Center, MVAO Middle School, Anthon, Iowa Present: Wimmer, Kennedy, Streck, Hamann, and Schram; 7 guests. Absent: None AGENDA: I. Opening of Meeting – President Wimmer called the meeting to order and declared a quorum at 7:00 PM. II. Communications A. Public Forum – Mrs. Else asked the board if anyone is up for election this fall. No board members are up for reelection this year. The next school board election will be in November of 2025. Kevin Clausen addressed the board about the direction of our district, the lack of recent capital investments, and current tax rate. B. Correspondence - none C. Presentation from Innovative Schools Summit – this was postponed to a later date. III. Consent Agenda – Schram moved and Hamann seconded to approve the consent agenda. 5 ayes. Motion carried. General $317,970.60; PPEL $9,220; Activity $13,892.86; Hot Lunch $17,031.90; Infrastructure $73,762.98; Extra & Hourly pay $371,884.09. IV. Action Items A. Employee Resignations/Contract Modifications/Hiring – Streck moved and Kennedy seconded to approve the resignation of Dan Dougherty (HS Head Baseball) and to approve the hirings of Doug Ward (6th grade teacher), Tara Redenius (6th grade teacher), Kristy Wiederspohn (Anthon para), and Graig McElmuray (CTE lead teacher). After meeting in exempt session Streck moved and Schram seconded to hire Megan Wimmer for FCCLA. 4 ayes. 1 abstain-Wimmer. Motion carried. B. Review of Board Policy 400 Series – Streck moved and Schram seconded to approve the 400 series policies. 5 ayes. Motion carried. C. IASB Priority List 2024-2025 – Schram moved and Streck seconded to approve school safety, mental health, teacher recruitment and retention, student achievement, and on time and healthy state aid and supplemental aid. 5 ayes. Motion carried. D. Foreign Exchange Students 2024-2025 – Our school district will be welcoming four foreign exchange students this year. E. Cell Phone Policy – Extensive discussion was held. Student Council members Brynn Jacobsen and Brenna Mammen were presented to give a student’s perspective. Streck moved and Schram seconded to approve the cell phone policy. 5 ayes. Motion carried. F. Elementary, Middle School, and High School Handbooks – Hamann moved and Streck seconded to approve the handbooks with the changes discussed and with the new cell phone policy and new graduation requirements. 5 ayes.
